Addictions
Addictions Affect People Differently
Addictions can take many forms from simple cravings and impulsiveness to fully blown dependency on a substance for sustained existence. At the lower end of the scale the addiction may be as simple as having to buy something every time you visit a shop, and ranging upward to a total dependency on an abused substance such as alcohol or drugs.
While these Addictions are at the extreme ends of the scales there are literally millions of people throughout the world who are somewhere in the middle but do not believe they have a problem.
Such Addictions come in varied forms such as, sex and love Addictions, alcohol and drug abuses, internet and pornography Addictions, food Addictions, compulsive gambling and co dependencies such as smoking. However Addictions relate to any behavioural patterns that can become addictive and have the ability to be harmful to your well being.
Addictions can be hard to identify as the persons involved may be unaware they are addicted or become very cunning at concealing their problem. Alcoholics may hide their empty bottles under other garbage, use breath mints to conceal and freshen their breath and learn to function while being intoxicated. They may use excuses of working late or at friends’ homes to cover their drinking problems. Drug addicts may take to wearing clothes that cover all their bodies and make excuses of sickness to justify their ill health and changed energy levels and appearance.
Most people suffering an addiction will deny they have a problem. They usually take the attitude “I can give up anytime I want” or “I am just experimenting” This can lead to full on Addictions as these same people usually have unrealistic expectations of what their indulgence will do for them and don’t expect their Addictions to escalate rapidly as so many do. This happens as our bodies become accustomed to the increasing amounts of addictive behaviour quickly and then to achieve the same results it craves this and more. This behaviour becomes a viscous cycle as the lows experienced between the highs seem to become deeper and the addicted person’s cravings become greater and more frequent to overcome these lows. These people tend to spiral into their Addictions at increasing speed and intensity as they do not find the root cause of their destructive behaviour.
Anyone experiencing any sort of compulsive behaviour needs to seek professional help to help find and deal with the causes of any Addictions they may have.
